Melvin’s Juice Box Cleanse
If there is a true juice pioneer in NY it’s Melvin, after years of running (and being) the juice scene at the lifethyme market he joined forces with Miss Lily’s the Jamaican establishment (which also runs Radio Lily one of the best reggae station) and opened Melvin’s Juice Box one of the best juice bars in NY (or the world). The place is very well designed in somewhat of a bridge between Jamaican to British 60′s mod style, but what really going to attract you to stay is the vibe and the juices. Melvin is the prob’ the nicest juice man you’ll encounter, always smiling and giving you an extra taste. The juice bar offers a variety of uniquely designed juices and smoothies (and combinations of the two), with great additions of wheatgrass, bee pollen and organic protein supplements, making this an ideal destination both for a random passerby or a methodic juice cleanser.
What I really loves about Melvin’s approach to juices is that he knows how to integrate green ingredients such as kale, collard greens, cabbage, red onion and even garlic, with more traditional juice ingredients like Apple, beets, lemon or pineapple, as well as smoothie based ingredients such as strawberries or bananas. Many people have been criticizing Melvin for high prices, but I find them to be very reasonable both for the location and what he puts in the juices, and aside how can you criticize Melvin, while across the street you have organic avenue which offer their juices and fancy packages for much more. after debating Melvin’s approach with a co-juicer, I decided to take the challenge and explore a daily (or 3 days) juice cleanse based strictly on Melvin’s juices (which I find to have very high nutritional benefits and premium ingredients), here are the recipes and what my journey had been like.
One note before you run and do your own Melvin’s Juice Box cleanse, unlike the Blue Print Cleanse, which you’ll be able to easily do with a regular centrifugal juicer (such as the Breville juice fountain), since the Melvin’s cleanse offer a higher level of complexity and dealing with more leafy juices such as wheat grass, kale or collard greens, I find that it is better to use a masticating juicer such as the green star juicer or one of the new kids on the block (a new trend of masticating juicers) and a blender, so you can blend in all the extras.
As I mentioned earlier, Melvin’s juices are richer and higher in calories then lets say the Blue Print Cleanse so feel free to modify it, I originally picked a traditional setup of 5 juices and one smoothie for the daily routine of the cleanse, but I noticed as I was going through the cleanse that I needed much less than that, so I started substituting some of the juices with coconuts water, which stays true to the tropical nature of the cleanse.
Another point which you’ll want to consider is that Melvin’s juices tend to go back to certain source of ingredients such as kale, apples, beets, pineapple, I did found some similarity between some of the juices, while it makes it easier from shopping point of view of the cleanse (if you bought a pineapple it makes sense to juice it all), it does affect the routine of the cleanse, since the cleanse is not based on lemonades I choose to add some coconuts water to balance it out. Just like in any cleanse, it is important to ease in and out of the cleanse, though perhaps with less focus on vegetable form of ease in and more fruit based one, I find it to be fitting more with the nature of the cleanse.
Up with the Cock (Known in the box as RISE-UP – $10) I can’t think of better combination to start the day with rather than wheat grass, pineapple, apple, bee pollen, strawberry, banana, this is a true breakfast juice since its not only healthy and energizing it will also leave you full for the day as it is a smoothie hybrid.
Green Light ($9 at the box) Brilliant combination of kale, celery, collard greens, green chard, parsley, lemon, ginger. This is the basic green option of Melvin, I recommend starting with this one and moving on to more advance mixes which include even greener produce and garlic (yes garlic juice).
The Trump Tower (Known at the box as SWEET & DANDY – $8) The Trump tower is an example of classic juice at it’s best, capitalizing on all the basic ingredients of juice (specially the one you’ll expect to find in a juice cleanse). This Apple, beet, lemon, ginger, carrots, pineapple juice will be there for you around the lunch time of your cleanse, just in case you have a lunch deal you need some Trump advice on.
The Fire Department (Known as CATCH A FIRE – $8 in the Box) It’s the time of the cleanse for detoxing, This juice is a pure detox monster, what we find in other juice cleanses like the BPC cleanse as spicy lemonade, only that this juice has much more substance, really showing that Melvin’s cleanse and juices are based on true nutrition rather then just lowering the calories – a trend we got accustomed to see in many juice cleanses.
One Love (Known in the box as JAMAICAN GREEN – $9) Kale, apple, lemon, ginger & celery juice which brings all the best ingredients in the juice world under one juice, One love is the type of juice that brings unity to the cleanse. as Bob said it, after drinking this juice, There is one question you’d really love to ask..
PEANUT BUTTER & JELLY ($10) Blueberry or strawberry, banana, protein powder, lecithin, spirulina, granola, organic peanut juice, what an amazing way to finish up the day. a massive load of health, minerals and protein, if this is too much for you at the end of the day, feel free to substitute this juice with one of the earlier juices in the cleanse.

The Melvin’s Juice Box cleanse is an amazing cleanse, it is one of these cleanses that combine so many amazing things in it, a true reminder why I love juicing so much, as well as a reminder of how refreshing and endless the journey of juicing can be. Thank you Melvin!
